MR FREAK or David Roil has a
background in Costume work. Starting with Sharon Matthews (1995-1999)
that has had the COSTUME CAVE that was (then situated in Allen street,
then next to Downstage, now on Wakefield), run only by herself and now
husband Martin Roberts.
At the time David was part of the Public Relations Department of the
then PARKROYAL (1994-1998) where he was in charge of all internal and
external promotion of the Hotel.
Some of the events that where part of this promotion were THEMED
events that included costume. |
 |
Every year the HOTEL had THE
ANNUAL PARKROYAL BALL, that was famous for a large scale event that was
themed over both the mezzanine and ground floors of the building.
Costuming was supplied by the COSTUME CAVE and then 80 staff and 300
performers were outfitted and costumed.
David then was taken on part-time at the COSTUME CAVE on Saturdays,
then in 1998 became full time floor manager and staff trainer.
At the COSTUME CAVE the idea was to dress the client individually and
to their needs of the event they might be attending. |
 |
From there David moved onto
RECREATION with JANET DUNN (2001) that was then situated in Aro street,
learning to operate industrial machines and gaining the knowledge of
DECONSTRUCTION/RECONSTUCTION of garments.
Modelling also took place with RECREATION and also QUIDITTY for the NZ
FRINGE FESTIVAL, HOUSE OF HANK, independent photographers, artist FERGUS
COLLINSON, then of course FREAK itself.
Construction of the FREAK garments takes place on the body of the
client because everyone is different and of course the mass market
doesn't allow for this. |
 |
The history of clothing is
totally overlooked at this level and needs to be addressed as this
usually has people taught that their body is wrong for what is
necessary to look "trendy", therefore there is a lot of humans who feel
that they don't fit in and of course the only sizes that are available
are those that are all from different countries and of course they don't
fit anyone. FREAK of course is for
both men, wimmin and FREAKS alike.
FREAK is of course for the modern man that wants to stand out, but
any of the designs can be translated to wimminswear.(having different
cut patterns to their clothing)
